Types of Asbestos Containing Materials Plus Information About How and Where These Products Were Regularly Used

In order to help North Carolina workers and/or their family try to figure out how and where there might have been exposure to asbestos dust in the past that later caused mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, or asbestosis, we provide some information about the most common asbestos-containing product types.
 

Thermal Insulation

  • Common product types: joint compounds, plasters, duct sealants, textures, sealers, coatings, tapes, finishing cement, mastic, fibrous adhesives
  • Regularly applied to: walls, ceilings
  • Trades who often used: carpenters, drywallers, plasterers, painters, residential contractors, homeowners, residential construction and renovation trades
     

Gaskets and Packing 

  • Common product types: gaskets, packing, felt, sheet, rope, wicking, cloth
  • Regularly applied to: flanges, valves, pumps, boilers, other piping systems

Friction Materials

  • Common product types: brake linings, clutch facings
  • Regularly applied to: automobile or truck brake and clutch assemblies, cranes and other heavy equipment, manufacturing machinery, elevators, railroad machinery
